A beautiful RockLove feature in the latest issue of Gothic Beauty Magazine - Issue 31! I'm quite excited by this showcase; not only am I an avid reader of GB, but it's been somewhat of a teenage goal to find myself within its pages. As many of you know, I never planned to be a jewelry designer... but I DID decide at an early age that whatever it was that I ended up doing, I wanted it to be dark and creative enough to be found in this zine.

08/18/10 - Gift Shows

O Inspiration - I am thankful for your visits but next time not at 6 in the morning after I stayed up late reading? The past few days, I have been attending the New York International Gift Show - here fashion/accessory/home good designers from around the world gather to wholesale their lines directly to attending store buyers (who also travel from afar). This convergence is something I have wanted to begin, but prior was just not quite ready. Not only does it require a good amount of financial capital, but established branding, quality product, the ability to produce large quantity, sales assistants, and the culprit of my morning meditation: a damn fine booth display.

Adopted by the generous kaRIN of the band Collide, who has been designing in the wholesale industry for over 15 years, I was able to do a bit of reconnaissance at the event. Spending most of my time in the "Handmade" section (and by that I mean it's own huge conference space of back to back ten foot booths), other artists opened up with a few tips of the trade and gift show vending insight. Mainly the little things that you would probably not think of your first year... like what your order form should look like, and how to keep a new sheet per clip board in a basket so that if things get crazy, store owners can just start writing down style numbers and quantity themselves. Tidbits a veteran would know, but I would be up shit creek without considering my first time in the pen.

Needless to say, it was a lot to take in, and I may not even be accepted for ANY of the many wholesale gift and accessory shows across the country. Most have wait lists, so that gives me plenty of time to prepare my own fabulous RockLove showroom square. Happy to report that no one had my style, and no one had a booth like I would want to decorate! The first step in a long time (and intimidating) career move!

Don't want to give away any ideas here - another very stressed topic of discussion from the mentoring designers... NOT sharing to avoid the plethora of copying in the industry... But rest assured that my NY Comic Con booth this October will be my foray into the high end display world!

In other news, somebunny may be wearing jewelry in an upcoming magazine feature... and at some point soon, Gothic Beauty Magazine should have a RockLove spread. Meanwhile I am finishing up my new Medallion collection, inspired by the turn-of-the-century fobs awarded by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria to their courtiers. Having some trouble with the very last design... want to incorporate color, gemstones since I feel so much of my jewelry is big silver thing on chain silver thing. Looking at the prototypes now, and just ONE variation is not quite right. But quite excited nonetheless - I wear two of them daily and get frequent compliments.

EDIT: I didn't realize I missed posting a magazine article - an extensive interview of RockLove about online marketing, specifically Facebook in Art Calendar Magazine. Only thing is, the interview was many months before this issue hit newsstands, so some of the stats are embarrassingly off. At one point they exclaim at a 10 different responses by the next day... when now I get 50 within a few hours. Ahhh progress! Thankful for the inclusion!

K) Civilian Press workings
L) new higher end gold and diamond Medallion line so that when it comes time...
M) hire a photographer for new product shots for the F) branding designer's new materials

SO THAT ULTIMATELY:
Z) all the fancy stores and press from the D) PR agent and E) sales rep are impressed and want to carry/promote RockLove. Once they see F) branding designer's fancy look books and line sheets.

.... and this doesn't include other projects, collaborations, SEO optimizing, revamping my blog, improving the website, making/shipping jewelry, customer service, current stores ....

I would ball up and cry except it's 100 degrees precisely outside and if any part of my body touches itself, my skin will melt together permanently with the heat.

It's springtime! It's SHOW TIME!

First off, thank you to all who made my birthday amazing! On March 30th, I celebrated RockLove's 2nd birthday and my 25th by having a 25% off one-day-only discount. About 100 orders cranked in (you guys know I never ever do sales that large), including an inbox-exploding influx of birthday well wishes.

Then was Viva Las Vegas -
Loads of fun with my main PinUp Angel Gals - Miss Kitty Baby (with me pictured), Marla Marachino, Becky Lee... I worked my ass off, had an amazing time, and sounded like a haggard drag queen by the end of the weekend. So spoiled being in NYC, the constant cloud of Sin City cigarette smoke really does a number to my voice. Despite it being my birthday (and Passover), I didn't have time to drink nor gamble, so it really was a tornado of diligence.

New friends from Sante Fe Vintage gifted me with a kickin' pair of 1950's black cowboy boots with green embroidered pin-striping. Rocked those around Manhattan just the other day, I love them! And the Viva Signature Necklaces sold like hot cakes (available online *here*).

This Sunday is the Nyack Springfest upstate a bit in Nyack, New York. Then soon I leave for the Old Pecan Street Festival in Austin, Texas (yes I'm bringing my new boots). Looking forwards to my first real trip down South... New Orleans is the only experience I have below Missouri and that was years ago. Wonder if my accent will sound funny to all those with a drawl?

More travel after that - LA for Ink-N-Iron plus Indiana for my brother's college graduation... in the meantime: REPO ZYDRATE GUN NECKLACES! At the moment, the powers that be are finishing up a few little business details, but I'm already casting and polishing the first few hundred. All is poised and ready for the official "go ahead!"

Soon my pretties! Along with new Press in Kink, Art Calendar, Snippets, AltNoir, and Gothic Beauty Magazine. Will post more about them as they go live... in fact, AltNoir is purchasable online right now and I have TWO fantastic editorial features. One whimsical feminine, and another a totally Gaga-inspired shoot! I'm quite impressed with the quality of this independently produced zine.

More as it comes... I'll leave you with this little goodie, a new steampunk graphic novel (visible free online but will also soon be published hardcopy). "Sailor Twain" and RockLove will be creating an exciting bit of merchandise in the future...

It's almost time for Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender! Last year was great fun, but as my first time to the event, it was quite intimidating. Though this round, surrounded by my favorite Pin Up Angels in the sunny Las Vegas Strip, it should be better than ever!

Most of the weekend I will be shopping and enjoying myself (VIP Tiki Pool Party Sunday, ooh la la!)... but Saturday only, RockLove has a booth at the Viva classique car + vendor show. And in addition to the stress of making enough merchandise to sell at the tables, I'm proudly providing the hepkat extravaganza with their own signature merch piece. New territory for me, it's made from laser cut lucite (acyrlic) with silver plated chain for maximum pin-up-ability! Quite happy with the outcome, hope everybody enjoys!

You know you're in trouble when your mum Facebook messages you that your blog hasn't been "updated in forever..."

But I do agree, mother knows best - it's time for some exciting updates!

The biggest project on the table: I finally finished the WHOLESALE CATALOGUES! For months I've been working on them myself to conserve the $5K I was quoted by numerous graphic designers; I'm quite proud of the finished product. The printed booklets look stunningly professional, and I'm currently communicating with stores internationally who are interested in carrying the line in their boutique. Today I sent out packets all over the US + Spain, Norway, Switzerland, and France. Click the link above to download an e-version and let me know what you think.

Also my press page has been revamped for a more streamline look.

In addition to juggling wholesale, I've been working on new merchandise for Inked Magazine and a few others not ready to be released. Though finally the next batch of OhGr Mr. Brownstone Pendants are done and will most likely go on sale THIS WEEKEND!

The music video that goes with it will blow your mind... I promise to post it as soon as it's online; to the song "Water" we take viewers on a creepy editorial about how the lyric necklaces are made.

Wicked Faire 2010 was last weekend, I again cameo'd as a Gentern. In addition to my notorious white bikini and high kicks, I was wearing the one and only prototype for the official Repo merch ZYDRATE GUN NECKLACE. Rarer than an albino sea turtle, it does exist! On sale asap!

Oh crap, it's almost Valentine's Day? I've been drowning in all-nighters; watching the sun rise more mornings than the entirety of my college career... January has flown by as I craft my very schnazzy new wholesale catalogues. My proof arrived in the mail today - 20 full color pages of tedious graphics and painstaking photography. It looks AWESOME!

The first 100 Mr. Brownstone necklaces have been sold and shipped out to their enthusiastic new owners; recipients have been submitting photos of their unique pendant online. You can see the discussion here: *click me*

Even more exciting, the snippets of secret unreleased original lyric sheet are now being compiled on their own website made by Litany Forum member "Dreb" - and it blows my mind! Every day more bits are added, slowly filling in the new song which will finally be heard in the upcoming OHGR album. Keep an eye on the puzzle's progress... and of course a few are out of order for added complication, so once the lyrics are all found, there will be a bit of Rubix Cube shuffling for added measure.

Oh and pstt, PS - not only will we release another 100 Mr. Brownstone necklaces soon, but there is a whisper in the wind about a potential new RockLove + Repo merch piece...

12/30/09 - RockLove in 2010

Reflecting back on my blog entries, practically every post includes an exclamation of "I can't believe it's already (January, March, October)!" This year has shot by like a anachronistic rocket, faster than any other of my paltry 24, and I'm left with quite a bit of anxiety for 2010.

Great things have happened in 2009, from Repo! The Genetic Opera Road Tour madness to Miley Cyrus wearing RockLove jewelry in her music videos and The Today Show. The website is starting to get a consistent quantity of daily sales, and I'm starting to sleep at the end of the month knowing I can pay my bills.

But 2010 will be the make-it or break-it year. My goal of elevating RockLove to a full press-recognized, store-carried brand is so within reach it's terrifying. Recently I conquered the realm of (semi)affordable self employed health insurance... the world is mine for the taking.

I know it's not the most *business* savvy approach, but I feel the best way to defeat New Year woes is to write them down - and then burn the paper. I'm feeling candid and nostalgic, so I'm going to share my fears here.

1. New jewelry - I'm starting to wonder if my pieces are special enough... if they are accessible to all ages, if I can market them to mass media, rather than just the alternative niche. So far I've had some great and terrible luck with press, and part of that is because my jewelry is small and wearable - the "everyday jewelry" is not what pops in a fashion photo shoot. Maybe it's time for a higher end couture line, a new line of inexpensive shinies, and then start discontinuing those that fall in between? Less time focusing on PR, more time focusing on designing.

2. Miley Cyrus - I have to make it count! I'm so lucky that she enjoys my jewelry, and even more blessed that she wears it publicly... but as a business, I need to advertise that it's a RockLove product. Never have I had a celebrity client with such a huge following, plus beautiful modeled shots and stills from TV are practically falling from the sky into my lap. I've been sitting on the phone numbers for Teen Vogue and Seventeen for a week now because I'm scared to cold call the Fashion Directors and say "Hi, I own RockLove jewelry and want you to feature Miley Cyrus wearing my necklace in her latest music video." I'm terrified of MISSING a huge opportunity, and my bad experience with a past PR agent has left me gun-shy about hiring another. But I'm also fearful of an influx of orders and expansion before I'm equipped to handle it.

3. I'm burnt out. When will I get my fire again? I keep waking up later and later each morning... but NOT working, taking a break freaks me out more. I can't even watch a movie without jewelry in my hand or I feel like a bum. I'm obsessed! But that only fuels the fatigue.

4. I'm holding myself back. I'm fearful of expansion and not being able to handle it. I know there are things I could do to take it to the next level. I also am not emotionally ready to take out a big loan for either larger scale production or a press campaign.

5. Retail or Wholesale? As I stated above, I need to decide which I would rather focus on next - press and publicity to vastly increase my online retail sales (more stress and cost upfront, but greater profit IF it pans out)? Or focus on working with stores, embracing the wholesale frontier (far less profit, but more credibility as a brand). I've been stalling on my damned catalogue for months now... I need to just commit, print, and send it to stores. I've been researching stores since RockLove was conceived; I know who I want to approach. Right now I'm being a textbook example of self defeating prophesy.

That's the list of 2010 agida inducing topics... hopefully in a few months I'll be re-reading this post, yet again stating "I can't believe it's already March!" and laughing at how much I stressed about a simple calendar change. More importantly, I hope by then, I would have made progress!

We'll make it through! Here's to a new year of challenges! A new year of jewelry! And a new year of saying EFF-YOU to a desk job!

Hi Cats and Kittens!

A RockLove update now that I'm back in town - I popped on over to the west coast for a record low... only 36 hours in Los Angeles for the LA Bust Craftacular. They had a cancellation and asked if I was interested in the spot, so on a whim I booked a flight. Why not; the NYC Craftacular the previous Sunday had been a raging success with a line around a few Union Square blocks until about 5pm at night!

However this round I was not so lucky - rain hindered the event substantially. People in LA already have to compete with terrible traffic and no parking, so with Saturday's deluge, no one ventured out of the house to holiday shop. Ahh well, live and learn I suppose.

In other good news, I found out belatedly that my Dark Cameo Ring was pictured in the Time Out NY Issue #734 for the Brooklyn Indie Market Steampunk Festival review.

AND - check out this awesomeness: I was a part of a Steampunk Feature for Vice Versus TV. It's quite well done, though I look pretty silly in most of it - a long day of following us around at events and they seem to choose shots where I look like a steamy airhead lost in space.

Spent a long time today writing up the listings and descriptions for the new Imperial Collection - I've been getting quite the runaround as I attempt to launch. Originally I was gold plating, but my vendor won't get back to me, won't do the quantity we agreed upon, won't do the pricing I need. I am contemplating 14K, but yeesh, I certainly don't want to stock it - it will have to be made to order. Numerous photographers have a set of each new piece... as soon as they are done taking shots, the pieces will go LIVE on the RockLove website.

And none too soon - RockLove is celebrating Black Friday by making it a whole damn weekend event. 09/12/09 - Upcoming Shows

Yesterday Chris and I had a grand old time vending the Nyack Street Faire - a favorite event, it was a beautiful brisk day, so a deluge of shoppers from all around the tri-state descended upon the nautical town. There are five street faires there a year, and so far I've done all of them for the past two seasons - so devoted to the show because when RockLove went full-time I actually was living on Main Street as a local. I'm always warmed by my wonderful repeat customers - many come wearing their RockLove Jewelry. The past few shows I've seen men and women of all ages, proudly displaying my work and sending their friends to my booth.

I was interviewed by one of the local papers, so cross your fingers that RockLove will end up in their press. So many vendors come through that show as they trek across the east coast, but typically only the store owners represent the native businesses... it would be nice to feature RockLove as a company that got it's footing right in town.

I was naughty and decided to test the waters with my secret new collection (which I will leak is called the Imperial Collection). I wanted to see reactions and gauge price points, and oh my goodness, it SOLD OUT! Now I have to frantically make more because in two weeks comes...

The Brooklyn Indie Market Steampunk Festival II! Check out the website and press release - they even used my Dark Cameo Ring in the picture. Not only will I be vending, but a few friends, the always-supportive boyfriend, and I will be personally walking in the fashion show. Wearing my secret new collection for the press to snap up *wink*

Then after that comes Halloween... off to Philadelphia for the Dracula's Ball Halloween Festival! Come join me in costume for dancing, costumes, live music, vending, drinks, and more - it's an all ages event at my favorite east coast club.

A CONFESSION: I've been neglecting to put the new Studs Collection online because honestly my camera is not up to par. I will be shooting it this week, thank you so much for your outstanding patience! I kept trying to schedule a borrowed camera (a macro for my digital SLR is around $800), but I've also been adding new designs here and there, deciding to hold off and release the collection in it's entirety.

It's going to be a busy October.

Auxilary Magazine just did a HUGE spread on RockLove - not only a feature of my jewelry on beautiful Siouxsie, but the centerfold SharonTK is also wearing the Dark Cameo pendant and ring set... all photographed by the fabulous Steve Prue.

The whole magazine rocks and is downloadable for FREE or you can order it in print.

Additionally, remember that grant in which I won silver place? The marketing director, Hilary, has been a wonderful mentor to me the past few months and wrote a beautiful blog about RockLove called "Breaking All the Rules." Check it out; some of the most encouraging words I've ever read - it's nice to know that people like that I'm conducting my business against the grain. Sometimes I worry I'm digging myself in a hole since other artists don't follow the same archetype. In fact, I fear that maybe the reason nobody else works like I do is BECAUSE it's a bad idea!

I keep plugging along nonetheless...

In other news, Imago Zine came out - a beautiful thick glossy book about alternative culture and art... RockLove has a bit in there.

And I'm going to be vending Dracula's Ball in Philly this Halloween (my favorite holiday, any excuse for mulled apple cider and pumpkin pie)! Come see me!

09/28/09 - Upcoming Events and News

Almost October already? Time for some updates -

Practically finished with the Studs Collection; I've been slow to photograph it and upload to the website because I keep adding a piece or variation here or there. It will be up within October, I promise - ready for the holidays! It turned into quite the collection, including the highly anticipated Dark Cameo's, a faceted domed ring, pyramid post earrings, and more!

It will also be featured in this coming month's down-loadable and in print edition of Auxillary Magazine.

Currently waiting on my Miley Cyrus momenta cards to arrive, so if you are interested in purchasing her Heart Lock and Key Charm Necklace for a young friend of family member (especially good holiday present), it will come with a postcard keepsake:

You guys are so SNEAKY! I've just finished today putting up all the links and pictures for my new Anthology Collection, and already a few have you have purchased necklaces! How did you even FIND it without me announcing a thing?

So the collection is out - a treasure trove of imported, handmade, and vintage charms with which you can build your own necklace. Each has a spiritual or historical significance, plus as some charms sell out, I will constantly offer new baubles on the website. There is a large spring ring attached so that you may add to your customized piece over time, plus change up it's components to match your outfit.

This morning, she rocked a new unreleased Feather on Wine Silk Ribbon around her wrist (it can be worn as a necklace or wrap) and a Heart Lock and Key Charm Necklace on the Today Show stage in Rockefeller Center. Had I known, I could have been there! Ack!

Some of you may know the band Skinny Puppy - an experimental post-industrial/electronica group I've listened to for many years now. Fronted by Nivek Ogre, he has recently created a side project "OhGr" which allows him to tinker even further with sounds and rhythmic theory. Yesterday I had the most wonderful philosophical conversation with Mark Walk, his partner in crime for this new endeavor, about their new upcoming album...

...we also tossed around ideas for some very special merchandise.

I cannot explain my joy at this cosmic timing. Last week I've been bemoaning my entry into the Hollywood world, feeling disjointed and discouraged despite my recent success in the industry. It's just not ME, I feel like RockLove and my personal integrity are constantly being threatened by money mongers and opportunists who portray themselves as more important than they really are. I enjoy reading that my jewelry was seen on the red carpet, but honestly, I don't even advertise who struts in RockLove silver. Have you ever seen a word on my website about Courtney Love or Lindsey Lohan?

But Mark and Ohgr's ideals have remained connected with their fanbase - despite their renown, they have not been seduced from their original goals of a communal interactive shared experience between musician and listener. A beam of light that shines on a path I hope to follow.

RockLove is returning to its roots. I'm not interested in celebrities, I'm interested in music, community, artistry, and inter-connectedness. And for a while, I almost forgot that!

8/24/09 - Revamping

I know I've been a naughty blogger... reading my jewelry buddy Ashley's beautifully designed and maintained blog has made me feel quite guilty about slacking.

Recently I've had anywhere from one to five house guests crashing with the boyfriend and myself; up to seven people for the past week and a half. A) This is the best birth control ever, cleaning up after everyone daily B) I have not gotten any work done. Those reading this - do not feel bad - I had a WONDERFUL time... but it's kick-the-rear-in-gear. I need to get back into the swing of RockLove. I figure since today is Monday, it's time to turn over a new leaf!

Step 1 - I need a better camera (or at least a macro lens). Brighter more colorful photos in addition to group shots for printed marketing materials. Anyone have a recommendation? I can use both digital and manual SLR...

Step 2 - I need to work on finalizing wholesale catalogues and press/media kits. Prepare to send to exclusively chosen new stores.

Step 3 - I need to update the RockLove website, stylize it a bit more, improve some of the photos and GIFs... generally make it more welcoming.

All of this on a shoestring budget and quickly since there are a million other balls I am currently juggling, none of which are a well filled bank account.

Not to mention this blog - which I keep letting fall to the wayside! I have exciting things happen all the time but typically by the time my 12-16 hour work day is over, I'm too exhausted to write about it.

So back to work for me... I'm thinking about a contest to both revive my energy and help strengthen the branding of RockLove. I'll need your help!

8/23/09 - Mags and Grants

RockLove shows up on numerous pin up models in Rebel Rodz #13 and Car Kulture Deluxe #35 featuring the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender from this past April. This is the 5th and 6th billy culture zine I've spied my work in... with more to come next month when the Ink-N-Iron covers release. Keep your eyes open - if you ever see RockLove in the press, let me know! Chances are I'm out of the loop :P

RockLove is honored as a Top 5 Silver Circle Finalist in a national annual competition for emerging designers "The Jewelry Design Business Development Grant" sponsored by industry supplier Halstead Bead Inc. The process was more complicated than a college application, so it was a relief that they liked my company (which is a bit more 'brand' rather than artsy, plus a little out there with the collabs and marketing). Though I didn't win the big money, I'm very excited about the door prize... they are carefully pairing me with an industry exec who will offer me personal advice and guidance for the next year (and probably longer with a developed friendship).

Truthfully, this will leave a greater impression than cash, since at this point in RockLove's progress, I'm floundering. Fearful of burning out, fearful of not doing enough, of missing opportunities, of taking too many projects on at once, at not utilizing my contacts or exploiting the fact that I live in NYC. Having no financial backing, of being a one woman show, of my production costs and disinterest in outsourcing or ditching quality for cheap overseas labor. Let's just say, owning your own company may seem glamorous, but most nights I fall asleep feeling way over my head.

Well why not, I want to blog about my current fashion (faux pas?) obsession.

You already know that fierce stilettos make me go gaga and playsuits are the way of the future... but if you have never met me in person, you might not know my penchant for eyeshadow. I'm one of those people that never understood the "day" and "night" makeup rule.

As a gal with rather bulbous eyes (visualize a praying mantis) and a goth/rocker to boot, my peepers are the highlight of my face. Lately I've been into applying bright shadow all around my eye, including underneath and the bridge of my nose. Feathered and blended, I prefer one or two matching colors (pink and coral, orange and umber) rather than the clashing hipster thing, but extend it all the way out to my brow line. Afterward, I use liner (sometimes black shadow to keep the blended smokey look) and mascara to really pop the black against bright.

Currently I've been using a Chanel Quadra in Spice, along with some Cargo (wonderful Canadian line). But I have a few cheap Maybelline sets too that work just fine. If you have an Etsy seller to recommend who makes mineral shadow you love, I'm all ears!

In order to combat my Eastern European unibrow and to better match my vibrantly red hair (from a Feria box) - I shadow in my eyebrows. Rather meticulous about them, lest I look like I'm carrying my pet catipillar, I use a lip liner brush to blend in over the top a powdered auburn. The affect is a bit pin-up and cartoonesque, which is perfect for my personality since I gesticulate and make unintentional silly faces as I converse.

That's the latest - I actually got stopped in the street this week for a fashion blog, so I'll post that video as soon as I know it.

Unfortunately, she beat me to the punch... I meant to write this blog two weeks ago! Instead she featured me first - check out the wonderful things she said about me today!

Introducing Ashley Nizolek, the talented artist of A.N. Original Jewelry - and my best business buddy. Online friends, we've never met, which is astounding considering how long and frequently we've been brainstorming on bettering our businesses. Very few creators in the industry share their deep dark secrets, though since the budding of both our companies, we've helped each other make graphics, websites, line sheets, press releases, and more. Stressed over the phone with the announcements of the Economic Crisis, celebrated over AIM as we get new press, and traded jewelry in thanks for the others assistance.

Very different in technique, Ashley creates whimsical silhouettes and floral beauties hand pierced in sterling silver. Each piece is from scratch, rather than molded and cast, and her lines and finish are immaculate. With a distinctive touch, I am honored to watch her release new collections (haha I even get previews before they go public) and see her grow a signature recognizable style. One of the best representations - she was Etsy's featured seller in October 2008, rocking the scene with her funky yet classy Halloween series! Dominating all the front pages, read the interview!

Not only is Ashley a devoted jeweler and friend, she is also one of the best photographers I've seen! A few weeks ago, I helped her code her new blog, and already it is filled with stunning snapshots brimming with outdoor joie de vive. I definitely recommend not only checking out her Main Website and Etsy Store, but to follow the AN Original Blog for a daily dosage of nostalgia and smiles.

RockLove has been growing by terrifying leaps and bounds - so much so that I have nightmares about missing opportunities, losing prototypes... Well technically last night was something about running from people trying to kill me on a cruise ship. But I'm sure that was a metaphor for stress...

Next up on the RockLove radar - some crazy new projects! How have I been so fortunate to meet such generous and talented stylists, publicists, and creators chomping at the bit to take me under their wing? Somewhere written in the stars, RockLove sits in luck-land.

RockLove has received the exclusive invite to be a part of the TEEN CHOICE AWARDS 2009 gift suite - on top of 150 celebrities receiving a Heart Lock and Key Charm Necklace, the jewelry will end up photographed and credited in numerous magazines and celeb-blogs.

7. CUSTOMER SERVICE (thanks to SassySashadoxie and PUREnaturalMinerals who posted similar)
One, make sure you are having fun at this. If it is not fun, then your customer service, attitude, and art will reflect that. Two, treat the customer like how you would want to be treated times 10 or so. Always, go the extra mile. They will appreciate it in more ways than you can know at the time. Three, hand written notes or thank you cards. Four, Communication, communication, communication. Tell them you got their order, when it was shipped, when it is expected to arrive, and thank them for their order as soon as you receive it. This is really important for those first time customers or first time Etsy shoppers. Five, don't stress when you don't have sales. They come when they do. Often, they come in spurts. Enjoy the down time with a little promoting, team building, and working on your art.

8. BALANCE YOUR VENUES (thanks to CharlieandSarah)
Don't count on one source of revenue. Keep your baskets balanced between: Selling Online, Weekly Markets, Large Indie Craft Fairs, Street Fairs, Wholesale, Consignment, Online Drop-shipping Sites, etc.

9. KILL WITH KINDNESS
Every once in a while I get a jerk... "why didn't I get my package, it's been 36 hours since I placed my order" - Or recently a meany on Flickr saying he was going to report me for posting only pictures of my product. What?! So always kill with kindness... be so super polite and helpful that the crappy customer can't help but be satisfied, no matter how much you want to tell them to sod off.

10. ONLINE PROMOTION (thanks to DRyan327)
Ning.com, Twitter.com - Do a 3 day ad on Facebook or Myspace. They are $5.00 a day, and just remember not to let it run too long or you will get nailed for an outrageous sum of money. A lot of the popular blogs have inexpensive ads, some more than others, but here are a few... http://www.craftcult.com or http://www.craftopolis.com. I have a folder on my computer that I keep adding to that has all the good "promotion" type things I have found.

11. THANK YOU GIFT (thanks to Bluebell - I actually do this too)
For some (but not all) of my buyers I will add a small free gift with their purchase. On every order I take one of my mini business cards and punch a hole in it and tie a piece of ribbon on it. On smaller orders I wrap in pretty tissue paper and tie with ribbon.

12. SMILE (thanks to NoneSuchGarden)
If you do shows, SMILE. No matter how tired, hot, cranky, or sore your feet are, act happy to be there and enthusiastic about your craft! So flash you best smile and work it!

13. CONFIDENCE
When approaching a store to display your paintings, plan an opening party, or maybe sell your jewelry wholesale, exude confidence and experience whether you feel it or not. Walk into that salon with a portfolio of beautiful pictures, head held high shoulders back like you've got your work on the walls of Parliament, much less a little boutique. Confidence makes a WORLD of difference and also makes that store owner more confident to work with YOU since they now see how capable and businesslike you are.

Yesterday, on Etsy.com, I started a forum thread entitled "Your Big Dirty Secret" encouraging my fellow crafters to join me in sharing business secrets to our success. Big fish in the industry never want to tell; never help out us little guys... so why not compile amongst ourselves what little nuggets of wisdom our diligence has gleened.

1. PITCH
Don't be afraid to ask a magazine or newspaper to feature your work. Your work in a new boutique, art openings, street faires - if it is local, be sure to tie the story into the community to interest readers. Pitch them the story (don't wait for them to come to you with the idea), never underestimate the power of a free giveaway (something expensive) and have pictures and some sort of reader tie in at the ready. Once you get a connection, keep it and gently hound... these editors are very busy and need a few reminders of your existence. And if it's not print worthy, ask if it could be on their website instead.

2. START A MAILING LIST (thanks to TheTinyFig)
Start a mailing list. It's an easy way to get people to remember you, announce things, and bring in repeat customers.

3. LIBRARY BOOKS (thanks to SparrowSalvage)
Leave your card in your library books - especially if they relate to what you sell. If you sell jewelery, leave them in jewelery/fashion books. If you sell pet products, leave them in books about that animal. If you sell furniture, leave them in home decor books. Fiction works too, if you sell ornate stuff leave a card in a fantasy fiction, if you sell crisp modern stuff leave them in crime thrillers...make vintage stuff? Leave them in travel books. Some libraries go through returns for bookmarks etc and might throw them out, but judging by the amount of post-its, receipts, library slips etc I find in books, mine don't!

4. CAREFUL PRICING - NOT TOO LOW (thanks to PassePurse)
People like high prices. Sure some people are looking for something really cheap but look at Louis Vuitton and Chanel and Tiffany & Co. They have an almost cultist following and their prices are through the sky. I would prefer to associate my shop with very high quality, high priced merchandise. I see some people on Etsy selling their stuff for so cheap it's painful - I don't know that customers automatically think highly of those products. Low prices are not necessarily a great marketing tool.

5. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE A CONTACT (thanks to BeyondtheRockz)
Network and get ready for suprises - never underestimate any contact you have, remain open to all possibilities, and go ahead: put yourself out there and ask!

6. WEAR IT ALL (thanks to RockMyWorldInc)
Always wear all your jewelry. I mean all! Load it on! I wear 3 bracelets, earrings, 2 necklaces, and a ring or 2 on every finger. I only wear my own jewelry... even if I am just going to the grocery. I might forget my makeup and to comb my hair, but I never forget my jewelry. Always have a business card ready... don't try to search for an old used one in your purse - have new fresh ones always!

6/15/09 - Jet setting

I've been Jet Setting again and neglecting my blog again...

Just got back from another long week in LA; first for Ink-N-Iron 2009 and then additional days of network-partying, photoshoots, and other glamorous exhausting events. Not a day went by that I was in bed before at LEAST 3am, if not quite a few nights of 5:30 in the wee hours of the morn! New Yorkers, when we meet we are on time, grab a coffee, a dinner, whatever. But in Hollywood you have to go for drinks, go shopping, meet at a photoshoot, continue to a club... and always an hour or two after the official designated time "IN CASE OF TRAFFIC."

Now I'm sad to say that many people missed the lovely banner Chris made for the front of my website... upon my return to the city I am about 100 orders behind with more flowing in steadily (some of which are the tail end of the Repo Scalpel Necklaces). Ackkk, WHEN will I be able to afford a slew of clones to help me manage this increasing workload?

Ink-N-Iron was a blast, working with Emily Postula, my colleague who owns the store Torch Song Metals in upstate Nyack. I brought her along to sell her own work and help assist me with our collaborative line (which will soon be on the site). We also adjoined our 10 foot booth to the Pin Up Angels, whom RockLove has sponsored for about two years now. This was my second Ink-N-Iron with the ladies, but the first time in which I had my own real vending space. Quite nervous, Em and I had no idea how much merchandise to make or what to expect!

Friday through Sunday our booth was open until 10pm at night (mandatory), and then afterward I would party on the ship with the tattoo artists/vendors, check out the burlesque shows, join on the dance floor... pushing myself to experience everything the show had to offer. I'm glad I did - made some amazing new friends in psychobilly bands: The Creepshow, Koffin Kats, and the HorrorPops.

Other exciting connections and potential upcoming photos include: Tattoo Magazine, Tattoo Life, Rebel Rodz, Inked Magazine, and more... my personal favorite being Maxim Magazine. I've been a Maxim reader for damn near a decade, plus their very sweet stylist and photographer loved my work. I can't wait for the day I go into the bathroom, pull out my trusty subscription, and play "Where's Waldo" with RockLove jewelry.

Not only did I get to see all my favorite Angels, but I revisited and made new friends with the scene's photographers. Here is Susana of Vestige with her stylist Christina, plus Cathy of Through My Eyes Photography, Roy Varga, Jorge of JMVfoto, etc...

In fact, later that week after the show, Jorge shot ME as the model:

Stayed at my girl, Black Grace's house - she and her roommate Josie took me to all the LA hotspots and in turn I took them to my meetings/parties. Venice Beach, Swingers in Santa Monica, The Cactus for midnight tacos, The Rainbow for 80's rockstars, Cat and the Fiddle... and Grace took me to see where she grew up in 29 Palms.

I'm such a city dork, I took a MILLION photos of the desert! I've never been to a place where people rake their backyard... and it's just DIRT. Dumbfounded by the windmills, I felt like Don Quixote!

I had a wonderful time this round in LA and met some great new friends. Emma, a Hollywood stylist, is one of my new favorite people (besides Grace, whom I got to know much better, which was lovely)... Emma not only helped me out both Saturday and Sunday at Ink-N-Iron, but she introduced me to my new headband wearing obsession, making by hand for me my little growing collection.

Another reason Emma is so cool (besides passing as my older sister and owning at least half the same brain)... check out the tat she got while at the convention! Recognize the clockwork? My second RockLove tat, and first real self-branded design.

Off to bed now - this week will be a frantic game of catch up as I regain my footing and prep for some huge future press!

5/18/09 - TopShop

Time for a relatively useless blog...

Despite being intimately involved in the rocker fashion scene, I rarely discuss style external of jewelry inspiration. But this weekend, after spending about $300 on, well, only 3 items, I feel it is time to revel in the emergence of 1950's meets 1980's glam in popular edge culture.

TOPSHOP is one of my favorite stores, introduced to me by my dear English darling, Jess. An exclusively UK brand until just about a month ago, the first US store opened in the East Village, Manhattan. Not only did I about piddle myself, surrounded by everything rocker, hipster, UK fashion, and new wave... all the best things when done well and in moderation... but it was the silhouette inspiration that astounded me the most. Let me correct myself. Hipster MENTALITY is not good... but when borrowed and tweaked with your own personal flair, the FASHION movement can be positive.

RE: this does NOT MEAN DAY-GLO. Fuck you day-glo. Neon orange and yellow is my kryptonite.

However, I did leave with this delicious Kate Moss grey on pewter playsuit which will be perfect for Ink-N-Iron. As we all know, I adore pin up but have to make whatever I wear a bit more rock-chic... and I don't do color. Contrastingly, a playsuit was a women's one piece from the 50's which was used as an all-around rompy fun outfit for beach side, pool side, outdoors, picnics, etc. Typically they are brightly colored floral patterns, embodying the flirty and feminine innocence of the era. Love the look but I can't find anything to match my skin tone and personality so until now I've just had to appreciate from afar.

Suddenly this cut is coming back in style (you watch!) - a very tantalizing grope under the table from 5 decades past. Pencil skirts and victory curls are not a far cry from our generation's current aesthetics, but little shortie one-pieces is a ballsy high-fashion step back in time!

I pray to all dieties that no one makes a neon playsuit. JUST SAY NO TO DAY GLO!

And God help me... THE SHOES!!!

5/9/09 - Teamwork

This week required an emergency trip to Philadelphia to shoot with my favorite photographer and hero, Philip Warner (aka Lithium Picnic), who happened to be in town briefly for Catwalk Tragedy. Not only was the experience thrilling, it was also severely humbling - modeling is MUCH MORE DIFFICULT than most people accredit. Granted I will always be my toughest critic, but I feel that though I can make dynamic physical shapes, my face looks like I'm either sneering or bored.

Today was especially exciting... Chris and I teamed up for an extensive freelance collaboration with charismatic John Luisi, running for Staten Island Boro President. His website goes live Wednesday with his announcement of administration. With Chris video recording on his Canon XL2 (including body miking) and me taking stills on the Olympus E-volt SLR, we made quite the professional crew. The three of us visited about half a dozen locations around the island, filming statements about various issues and interviewing frustrated citizens about the current stagnation in structural and environmental progress.

Got stranded a bit at the 161 Firehouse, in which I impressed the guys by sliding down the fire pole, then climbing my way all the way back up two stories before sliding down again.

This project with John has really fired me up - Staten Island has such potential but the current legislation is offensively lining their pockets and ignoring even the most obvious community priorities. In addition to photography (and Chris editing their videos) I am going to be acting as a internet marketing consultant to Mr. Luisi, helping him better spread his message not just locally but GLOBALLY with the web.

5/2/09 - Back Again

My ass has officially adhered to a Virgin American airline seat. This April I managed South Beach, NYC, Vegas, NYC, LA, NYC, upstate, NYC... and now this week I may have to make an emergency run to Philly for a impromptu photo shoot with my hero, Philip Warner (Lithium Picnic).

RULE: If you are going to be flying transcontinental twice a week... splurge for the fancy plane. And be sure to apply for frequent flyer miles before you start traveling.

Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender was a blast! Check out the MySpace Photo Album for pictures of me and my crew, the Pin Up Angels (who I had the honor to sponsor at the event). Partying for a grand five days at The Orleans hotel and casino, I only vended one day to test the (very pricey) waters. Despite being in the desert, it managed to sprinkle a little rain on the outdoor Vintage Car Show, but in the end it was definitely worth it - RockLove will absolutely have a booth annually at Viva!

RULE: When going to Vegas for a week, expect to loose at least 4 years of your life to second hand cigarette smoke. Everyone smokes EVERYWHERE, be it in your "non smoking" room, the restaurants, the casino floor, the pubs, even the bathrooms. Wash all your clothing twice upon return to the real world.

RULE: Free drinks while gambling also decrease life span but make up for the fact that your hair perpetually smells like an ashtray. I started with $20, left with $10, but got about $100 of free drinks out of it.

The very generous Spooky Dan and Tammy allowed me to crash at their place in Los Angeles as I sponsored the Fangoria Horror Show. Despite the event not having the turn out I expected, I had a blast running with their group of friends... Enjoyed the VIP red carpet movie premier of 'Laid to Rest' along with the posh afterparty, and great nights of hot tubbing while projecting 90's horror flicks on the wall. Whereas I don't plan to vend Fangoria in the future (it's just a bit too small and not quite the right niche), I have been convinced finally to do San Diego and NYC's Comic Cons next year. Too bad I'll miss SD's in July... but if I plan any more plane flights, I think the boyfriend is going to kill me! I've got LA again in June for Ink-N-Iron!

My personal favorite photo from Fango Con - With Bill Shafer, the owner of Hyaena Gallery in Burbank, and a 1496 Albrecht Dürer. Yes I geeked, and since no one else seemed to apprecaite the rarity of this work, my Christian Medieval Art degree came out and I started giving history lessons to anyone who would listen.

The Springfest in upstate Nyack was a success despite being about 100 degree weather. Granted now that I'm back in town, there is forecasted rain for the next week.

RULE: If you are going to live like a rockstar, make sure you don't have a real job, because otherwise you have a million orders and about 200 customer emails that need attending when you return home. Not to mention laundry, housecleaning, and bills to pay.

Back to work for me - check out the website, I'm in the process of posting new collaborative pieces with my partners TORCH SONG METALS and JUNGLE TRIBE. So far I've added leather cuffs and stud earrings. Thank goodness I'll be home for the month, I have a lot of new pieces to finish and release! Great to be back!

Back from Vegas! The Rockabilly Weekender was amazing, and as pictures roll in, I will post an album, but what far outweighed my trip was the return.

Tired, hungry, motion sick, and hoarse from the immense amounts of Vegas second hand smoke, Chris picks me up from the airport and is unnervingly quiet. No kisses, no hugs, no real conversation the whole way home. I'm feeling nauseous for two reasons now until we walk into the door and I find this:

My photos don't even do justice to the detail and posh contemporary vibe of our new living room - the side tables are black wood and glass with secret drawers, matching our black walls with white molding accents. The side lamps are on timers and dimmers, the coffee table opens on both sides to contain the DVD collection and other knickknacks. Pictures are framed of the two of us and our dog Adara as a puppy... candles (matching burgundy) are lit and the room glows. Even the switch plates are new detailed metal, everything in our favorite colors of black, red, silver, and gold. On the far side is our mounted flat screen TV, which has triple mood lighting above, is my favorite creation:

White bulb lamps (he even put energy savers in for me), contained in black bird cages (which we already had and couldn't think what to do with)... he then decorated them with these crystal bead wire things I used in part of an old costume back in college, and accented by little poppy silk flowers. How the HELL did he come up with something like this, I have no idea, but that boy could get a job interior designing!

I didn't count, but I think I burst into tears at least three times... I can't wait to have everyone come over and enjoy our new space! Everyone thinks they have the best boyfriend/husband, but sorry ladies. MINE JUST PROVED IT! Thank you Chris, I love you mostest!

Late last night Chris and I returned from a beautiful trip to Miami - sunburnt and with the same cold with which I left, only now more severe. It's put me devastatingly behind, and I feel like at some point I may just hack out a lung (and I don't even smoke). Each night I go to bed as the sun comes up, unable to breathe if I lay down and coughing too loud and frequently for Chris to sleep either. I've tried everything from 6 types of losenges, zicam, niquil, robitussen, tylenolPM, hot tea, gurgling salt water, hot water, even hydrogen peroxide something or other.

Last night I self medicated by sitting amongst blankets upright on the family room floor watching horror movies till 7am while continuously drinking little sips of hot water so poor Chris could sleep a bit before work.

I've lost my voice - the past few days have been less than productive, with a cold kicking my ass. Either way, I'm off to South Beach, Miami for rest, relaxation, and a sun tan. Chris and I haven't gone on a vacation in a while; with both our works intensifying with the holiday season...

Lucky him, we get to visit his awesome condo-living, chef-caliber partying parents, on Spring Break weekend, for my birthday, topless Nikki Beach with a girlfriend who has to keep her mouth shut due to laryngitis.

I just don't want tan lines. And two words: WET WILLIES

As you can see by the picture, last time we were there was quite a few years ago - I was just back from Italy and still with butt lengthed natural blonde hair.

In other news, had a great time in New Jersey last weekend performing with the 'Midnight Surgeons' Repo Shadow Cast. Many photos and vids can be found online - or if you haven't yet, friend me on Facebook ("RockLove"), and amuse yourself looking through my tagged photos.

The cast consists of all my favorite east coast Repo krew, and frequently I reflect on how lucky I am to have found such a tight knit group of friends. Never have I had such a large support network of like minds - it couldn't have come at a more perfect (vulnerable, stressful, needy, overworked) time in my life.

Studs Collection has been coming along but was delayed by this week of illness...

Need to write a RockLove Newsletter, post Phililp Warner's latest modeled photo of the Anthology Collection, and another blog about my latest collaboration with the novel "Palimpsest"... I think I'll do it from the beach!

Oh and finally - honorably I was made an official "Girls of Steampunk" member! Huzzah!

RockLove's anthem and name is based upon the idea of mutual respect and inspiration between artists... so it is a travesty that I have yet to introduce you to one of my favorite like-minded steamerpunkers, Pamela of TotusMel. Not only is she a radical mother with hair the color of Jelly Bellies (with just as many flavor options), but she too embraces an antiquated craft to create something fiercely unique while simultaneously edgy and anachronistic. Tatting, something we might have watched our grandmothers do in half-interest while playing at their feet, is an art near-lost...

Pam, along with a small community of other devotees, are reviving the form and exceeding the traditions of doilies, table cloths, buttons, and lace collars. With the prevalence of Victorian revival and Steampunk, the delicate work is becoming a staple in gothic fashion. Not that I know a thing about it's creation, mind - I can carve silver and cast gold, but cannot FATHOM the complexity of these intricate pieces!

Not only does TotusMel represent exquisite work, but she pushes the gamut of conventional accessories. Her latest work, anklet and foot adornments, are my personal favorite! Collars fit for Queen Elizabeth, with more knots than the blackwork on Isabella of Spains chemise! Another stunning addition to her collection are the beaded masks, perfect for a ball, carnivale, masquerade, or midnight tryst.

TAX SEASON!!!

I'm sitting at my desk surrounded by about a half dozen piles of sorted receipts along with another mountain of unreviewed pages behind me. Not to mention all those online invoices for materials, travel, server/site/PayPal bills, Etsy payments, costuming, order confirmations...

Anyone want to hide along with me under the bed and hope the government isn't interested in our businesses? I've got a box of cookies and some JuJu fish...

For fun, here's a glimpse of my first run through the Wicked Steampunk Costume Contest. For the initial screening we were supposed to walk, pose, and move off - however the audio tech had the hots for me and instead cued some Juno Reactor. Ever the exhibitionist, I shook my money maker. You miss the beginning however; to get to the ground I actually slid into the splits. Like a bawssss :P

I know I've been MIA for the thousandth time - but I swear to good reason. Not only was I out for Wicked Faire, but this past week and weekend I have up and MOVED again. This would be apartment number 4 in 2.5 years... number 6 since I started dating Chris.

After no sleep at the Con I came home to 250 Repo Scalpel orders, an unpacked apartment, and a rapidly approaching moving day. We managed it all, though technically Fios has yet to hook up our internet and cable, nor do we have any furniture beyond my studio and the kitchen. Thankfully, Chris ran out and got for me a wi-fi USB so I can at least access my administrative site and PayPal to ship out the jewelry!

The Con was amazing, despite being T-boned in Maggie's car by a drunk driver the night before in Philly... Tori (the other Gentern) and I were almost taken out; so much so that we couldn't even get out of that side of the vehicle, the doors were crunched in. The rest of the cast was amazing, the lighting and stage were shockingly professional, and the crowd was more enthusiastic than any I've seen on Road Tour! Tons more about that, but you can find plenty of pictures here:

Wicked Faire Flickr Pool

I did a bit of Steampunk Belly Dance, posed for many a photo, and won second place in the costume contest. I guess it's not too appropriate to have the gyrating half naked contestant take the grand prize... ah well. I gave my second place gift to the third place "Roller Up" - a beautiful woman on old fashioned steamy roller skates.

Some incredible dancing in the evenings, a friend and fellow cast member says he got video of me having an impromptu industrial dance battle with this other guy. Here's hoping - I think you'll be impressed.

2/17/09 - A Magical Day in Manhattan

I love living in New York City - magical things can happen both when you A) open your mouth when you shouldn't and B) sit quietly and listen when you don't have the time.

Today I had a few business meetings in Manhattan, starting downtown and working my way up. Rising early to finish shipping out 30 more Repo Scalpel Necklaces at the post, my first stop is Union Square. Meeting in Barnes & Noble to pick up the latest Gothic Beauty Magazine (in which Repo, Dances of Vice, and my Clockwork Earrings are all featured), I hand off some stuff to Bianca, a fellow shadow cast member for this weekend's Wicked Faire.

Then onto Herald Square, in which I am hand delivering a custom Lust Chain and Medallion Necklace to a customer; for his very lucky girlfriend's birthday. Graciously he buys me a frappuccino before returning to work in the Empire State Building. Me and my loud mouth, I notice a man and his friend waiting for java behind me - one is stunningly dressed in a burgundy buttoned shirt, black vest, tucked tie accented by a cameo pin - I am impressed by his gothic aristocratic flair. Additionally offset by a pocket watch and layers of heavy silver chain bracelets, I have to compliment him on how fabulous he looks. "Steampunk" is one of the first words out of his mouth and before I know it, introductions are made and I am invited to enjoy my coffee at their table (at which there was a black top hat with small animal skull - vole? - waiting with their overcoats).

The man happens to be Steward Noack - the very steampunk photographer and engineer who is pictured on my website and myspace! The previous MTV Steampunk feature pauses on him and his monocle contraption when not playing...

He also is a fan of Repo, attends Dances of Vice, and runs in the same circle... as I listen to the sounds of the world shrinking, I then find out that the other man is even more familiar.

Steven Ellis is an award-winning fantasy illustrator and comics creator with such work as Magic Cards, Vampire Masquerade, World of Warcraft, High Moon... in fact, I'm pretty sure that as I look at my bookshelf, I have his work in numerous volumes. Secretly geeking out (or not so surreptitious after he stumbles upon my blog) he grants me a collage print copy and signs it.

After realizing at least an hour has gone by discussing steamy culture, Fangoria, business, future projects, and watching my favorite Steampunk Duel Video on YouTube, Steward goes back to work and Steve and I depart for the subway. As he and I part ways I recognize the violinist playing on the platform... Julliard trained James Graseck.

James and I have spoken before when I've either see him in Herald Square's subway or the Ferry Station of Staten Island... today he remembers me, my violinist to fashion designer career, and plays my beloved Monti Csardas and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. I sit for an hour on the R/W track enjoying his exceptional technique, enthusiastic conversation, and a cordial attitude to listeners you don't often witness on the streets of Manhattan. Then, much to my surprise, an entire 5 person camera crew descends upon him - behold, he is being interviewed and filmed for a German TV show (see his website, he is quite acclaimed). I too am recorded as he and I chat about baroque and Paganini, before finally I jump onto a train after an hour and a half underground.

Now home and at my jewelry bench, I reflect upon the amazing opportunities and people we often neglect while forging through the daily grind. Today I am inspired by comic art, victorian fashion, classical music, and the openness of human spirit when like minds meet.

2/13/09 - Valentine's Day with Dances of Vice

I've spent the past 3 days thinking it was Tuesday (ah, the confusion instilled when you work 7 days a week and don't have a "real job") - whoops, now it's Friday which means that tomorrow is V-Day!

My krew, Chris, and I are going to Dances of Vice's Valentine VooDoo Rhythms party... a New Orleans inspired 1920's-40's event in which the catch line is "booze fueled voodoo carnival styled love songs." Don't yet know what I'm going to wear, but I can't wait; nothing says fun to this little lass like an elegant speak easy with a loud brass band, flowing hooch, and the charleston!

2/7/09 - The Worst Party EVER!

Chris and I just returned from a great night of drinks and burgers with two of my friends, Nate and Jen, with whom I lived in Italy. The evening was full of laughter and reminiscing until we agreed to escort Nate to an ex-roommate's party - someone he lived with freshman year at Brown.

This was epically bad - the worst party I have ever been to. So terrible, in fact, that Chris and I felt the urge to sit here at 2am (yes, we had to escape before midnight) and BLOG about the traumatic experience.

We walk in to terrible music; a compilation of bad rap, emo, and miscellaneous non-hit wonders from the 80's. I am more than happy to enjoy those fabulous tunes from 25 years ago, but these didn't even grace the top 50's charts.

Swarming through the sea of Ivy-league graduates, I grab some beers for my krew, quickly burning bridges by uttering a snobbish faux pas. The booze choices are Budweiser bottles or Bud Light cans. I ask "does anyone have the bottle opener?" to which a few people give me unfriendly looks saying "it's domestic - it's a twist off."

"Oh. Thank you."
"Yah sorry, we're not as classy here."

Cue me slinking off with my shitty beer back to the comforting embrace of my equally appalled friends. We then survey the room to find these additional horrors:

- The kids weren't even hipsters, despite being in the East Village. Even that would have been a welcomed semblance of something recognizable.
- One guy is wearing brown leather loafers, no socks, pink denim shorts, and a red plaid shirt. Really?!
- A veritable plethora of sweater vests, polos, and button down shirts. Not even paired with khakis, one guy had white pants with vertical blue stripes.
- 7 of the girls (yes I counted) were wearing scarves indoors despite the unseasonably warm weather and indoor heat. At least 1 of them was a keffiyeh.
- The guys were all getting out their blackberrys to compare and discuss if they removed that protective clear vinyl off the screen. Obviously this means they are new to the phones, so they still think it means they are higher in the social pecking order. To this, Chris and I pull out our original iPhones and roll eyes.
- Three quarters of the girls were wearing ballet flat slippers, with two wearing the exact same pair of silver metallic pointy-toed flats.
- To match her shiny shoes, one of said girls (who was on the heavier side) was wearing a pair of blue metallic spandex leggings and a short top that did not cover her voluminous lamee ass. American Apparel "Night Fever Navy" in case you are interested.

There was one chick who looked pretty cool... turned out she was visiting from France. The rest of the girls were sitting all together a la high school dance on one side of the room while the guys spouted things like "still working on my PhD" and "so are you in for Ireland this year" in little circles around the apartment.

American-brewed beers were quickly consumed - Chris and I retreated for the door despite the free booze and obviously riveting conversation this soiree had to offer.

HOWEVER: The saving grace of the evening was this hilarious website forwarded to me by my Jewish mother... My favorite is "Health Care."

A wee update about Wicked Faire:

I will be performing in the Shadow Cast as a scantily clad Gentern... yes mother, won't you be proud. With confidence, I can say, you all will be impressed by my mastery of "Testify's" choreography... in 7 inch platform stilettos.

The following night, during the Steampunk Fashion show, I will be belly dancing - a type of nomadic fusion steampunk folkloric industrial belly dance gemish extroidinare. I spent about 2 hours today working out (with my 10lb scimitar) and realize I'm am quite out of shape. It's been over a year since I've taught professionally here in NYC - now I hover about a foot above ground when attempting the splits.

2/2/09 - Where the Hell did January Go?!

It's February! When the hell did that happen?! January was a blur of guests, road tour, visiting my family, then scrambling to get jewelry out the door. Now it's a new month, a short month, and don't even get me started stressing out about taxes.

This weekend, the boyfriend Chris and I went to Philly to visit our Repo Krew. I learned how to order a cheesesteak like a native and proudly rattled off my "wizz wit, wizz witout wit mushrooms, provolone witout wit mushrooms" choices. Poor Kilz (Chris' nickname - from here on out, I will use both, but I swear I'm only living with one man) got his first dose of female slumber party, subjected to 5 enthusiastic women, all theater performers, and the movie 'Bring It On' *wince*

My plate for February:

6-8: NYC Comic Con in which I am reuniting with my friends from Italy

Wicked Faire should be especially exciting; though I'm not attending as RockLove the vendor, I will be performing in the first American and first FULL professional shadow cast of 'Repo! ' - that means real singing and stagework for the entirety of the movie. The rest of the time I plan to enjoy the convention's events, along a steampunk theme... Here's hoping I win the Steampunk Fashionshow Competition (the prizes look scrumptious)! I'm confident that at least my unique Ethnic Nomadic Time Traveler look will open others to the notion that one can be steamy without wearing Victorian gowns and clockwork monacles. Don't get me wrong, I am in awe of that garb... but it just doesn't resonate with me as much as a 200 year old Ottoman coat over a Ghawazee and handmade leather, brass, and stone utility belt.

The rest of the time I will be personal body-guard for Repo creator/Graverobber Terrance Zdunich, deflecting rabid fan-girls and gothapottimi with The Force. (ps - my spellcheck for some reason did not dispute the non-term gothapottimi).

I'm completely overwhelmed... coming off Repo Road Tour 3, when the two weeks prior I had anywhere between 1-5 guests crashing in my NYC apartment. Family stuff in St. Louis before continuing home... where has the entire month gone?!

I'm no rock star but currently I feel as though I've walked onto a stage to shout:

"HELLO CLEVELAND!"
*crickets*
*a voice from the silent audience*
"This is Detroit, you jerk!"

I posted all kinds of announcements on my website, Etsy store, MySpace that I was not going to be in the studio and jewelry would not begin shipping until after January 26th. Assuming that I would get few to no orders as everyone recovered from the holidays, I'm now swamped with maybe 35 pieces to get out the door. Not to mention Darren (director of Repo) wants me to re-release Scalpel necklaces asap.

*huddles into a little ball* It's damn near time I hire an official assistant. I have an intern all summer, Rena, for whom I cannot wait!

But the guiding light as I stress... check out the pictures at my new handknit skull and cross bones tam! My mum made it for me ::in a day!:: while I was in St. Louis! What do you think?

Admittedly I've been MIA lately - busy with exciting new collaborations, cross country tours, vending and more, but NOT very good at keeping you all updated. I've created this blog, which I will update every Monday (if not more frequently) with the latest RockLove news. What shows, what cities, what projects, you will all be the first to know!

The big news, in case you somehow missed it:

September 2008 to January 2009

RockLove works with Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures film "Repo! The Genetic Opera" to create official limited edition Repo-Man scalpel necklace merchandise. All proceeds go to the Repo Road Tour (of which we've now completed 3), bringing the film across the country for live Rocky Horror-styled showings!

Four hundred and fifty necklaces sold in a span of mere weeks availible; I had to declare them sold out to catch up! It's been a phenomenon, garnering publicity not just due to the uniqueness of the movie, but for the guerrilla style marketing it has innovated. Director Darren Lynn Bousman (of the Saw series) and Terrance Zdunich (creator; Graverobber) treck tirelessly to bring the film to rabid fans, dressed to the nines in goth opera finery singing and dancing in the aisles. The collaboration continues so stay tuned for much more information about conventions, showings, and tour stops.

And shhh... the necklace WILL have an exclusive limited re-release!
